The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Umrao hospital is pleased to present this online guide to our patient care, research and medical education programs. Physical medicine and rehabilitation is the health care specialty which focuses on restoring the health and functional abilities of people after acute illness or injury such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, heart surgery, amputation, joint replacement, sports injuries,. musculoskeletal pain or spinal disorders. Our staff is dedicated to advancing knowledge of effective physical medicine and rehabilitation and to delivering the best possible patient care. Working under the able leadership of Dr. Renu Ambardar our lead physiatrist, the team comprising of psychologists, nurses and therapists work very hard to help our patients return to their highest possible levels of independent functioning. What is a physiatrist? A physiatrist is an qualified doctor (MBBS) and postgraduate in PMR who treats medical conditions that can cause pain or limit function. Also called physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, physiatrists provide a full spectrum of care – from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation – to restore maximum health and quality of life. Today, physiatry is one of the most comprehensive, multifaceted, and fastest growing areas of medicine worldwide especially in the developed world. Physiatrists see patients of all ages experiencing a wide range of problems – from sore shoulders to major disabling conditions. PM&R physicians are trained to focus on the whole patient and how each of the body’s major organ systems impact function. They help patients achieve maximum function and the highest quality of life possible. The practice of PM&R is built on an interdisciplinary team approach that addresses a patient’s physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being through a combination of non-surgical treatments including medication and injections; physical, occupational, and complementary therapies; and the use of assistive devices. Cardiac (Heart) Rehabilitation Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program that helps improve the health and well-being of people who have heart problems. Rehab programs include exercise training, education on heart healthy living, and counselling to reduce stress and help you return to an active life. Cardiac rehab can help you:
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Team Cardiac rehab involves a long-term commitment from the patient and a team of health care provider. After thorough assessment of the patient Physiatrist makes a cardiac rehab programme individualized to each patient. The rehab team comprises of physiatrist, physical therapists, dietition, psychologist . Working with the team is an important part of cardiac rehab. You should share questions and concerns with the team. This will help you reach your goals. Outlook People of all ages can benefit from cardiac rehab. The lifestyle changes made during rehab have few risks. These changes can improve your overall health and prevent future heart problems and even death. Exercise training as part of cardiac rehab might not be safe for all patients. For example, if you have very high blood pressure or severe heart disease, you might not be ready for exercise. However, you can still benefit from other parts of the cardiac rehab program. Ask your doctor whether cardiac rehab can help you prevent a future heart problem and improve your health. Spinal Disorders Spinal injuries in our community are not very uncommon. Neither are back, and neck pain. These disorders may result from “wear and tear,” improper ergonomics, or accidents. Most of the time back pain does not result in major disability or require surgery. We understand how distressing a back or neck problem can be. Our spine specialists under the umbrella of PM&R will work with you to establish a diagnosis and individualized treatment plan which may include activity modification, physical therapy, osteopathic manipulation, non-narcotic medications or interventional spine procedures. Our Rehab. physicians care for a broad range of people, ranging from professional athletes to weekend warriors to the aging population. Our focus is on helping each patient achieve his/her highest level of functioning and to treat pain so that it does not limit your activities. Stroke Stroke Rehabilitation The Department of physical medicine and Rehabilitation and is committed to providing the most advanced stroke rehabilitation care, including state-of-the-art treatments that are not widely available in other centers. The plan is tailored based on age, clinical presentation and duration of stroke .Once the patient is stabilized he is transferred to the rehabilitation ward for focused target oriented treatment. Patient evaluations include a thorough review of prior medical and neurological history, and review of prior rehabilitation therapy received. A structured rehabilitation program is established to maximize functional abilities, which may include physical (PT), occupational (OT), and/or speech-language therapy (SLP), specialized exercise programs, medications, assistive devices when needed, and other treatments as appropriate. Patients may also be referred for possible participation in clinical trials of new or emerging treatments for stroke recovery and rehabilitation, such as robot-aided rehabilitation or non-invasive brain stimulation therapy. We work closely with PT, OT and SLP staff at UMRAO Hospital to coordinate therapy and achieve the best possible outcome.
